Rock the steering wheel gently left and right while turning the key — not wrenching, rocking — and most jammed wheels release with a click. If yours doesn’t, stop before something snaps: forced keys and forced columns are how a small job becomes a big one.

The modern problem: electronic steering locks
Push-button-start cars replaced the humble lock pin with an electronic steering lock unit — a motorised bolt controlled by the car’s security systems. When the unit’s motor or board fails, the column stays locked, a warning appears on the dash, and the engine refuses to start; the car is completely immobilised on your drive. It’s an increasingly common fault as keyless cars age, and it’s a specialist fault many garages pass straight to a dealer — the usual advice is a recovery truck. My steering wheel is locked and the key won't turn — what do I do?
First try the classic: rock the steering wheel gently left-right while turning the key — a parked wheel under tension jams the lock pin, and this frees more often than you'd credit cases. If it won't release, or there's no key barrel because your car is push-button start, ring us.
What is an ESL / electronic steering lock fault?
Push-button-start cars lock the column electronically. When the ESL motor or its electronics fail, the dashboard typically shows a steering-lock warning and the car won't start — common on a number of Mercedes, VW group and other models as they age. We diagnose and repair or replace the unit at your location.
Is a steering lock fault expensive?
Mechanical jams are often quick and cheap. ESL unit faults are quoted by reg and symptoms — still typically well under the dealer route, which often starts with a recovery truck because the car can't be driven.
