Step 1 — search once, properly, then stop
Most “lost” keys are five metres away: coat and trouser pockets from the last drive, the bag you actually carried, the driver’s footwell, down the seat gap, under the car. If you’re out, retrace to your last confirmed use and ask at counters — keys get handed in constantly. Give it fifteen focused minutes. Then stop searching and start solving; hours of re-checking the same coat helps nobody.
Step 2 — ignore the “tow it to the dealer” myth
Search this topic and you’ll meet confident guides insisting that lost transponder or smart keys mean a recovery truck and a dealership. In the UK, that’s simply out of date. A properly equipped mobile auto locksmith generates the key data from the vehicle itself, cuts the new blade in the van, and programs the chip — transponder, remote or keyless smart fob — at your car, wherever it’s stranded. Same day on most vehicles. No tow, no lead time, and typically about half the dealer’s price. The dealer route exists; you just almost never need it.

Step 4 — if they were stolen, not lost
Treat stolen keys as a security problem, not a convenience problem: tell your insurer, and when we program your new keys we delete the old ones from the car’s immobiliser — the stolen key can no longer start the car (where the vehicle’s system supports key deletion). One honest caveat: if that key carries a cut emergency blade, it may still open a door mechanically — we’ll tell you whether that risk applies to your car and what the options are. Don't panic and don't book a tow. A mobile auto locksmith can make a new key at your car even with no spare to copy — including transponder and smart keys. Search once properly, then ring us with your reg: most cars are driving again the same day.
Do I have to go to a dealership for a lost car key?
No — that's the internet's most expensive myth. Big American guides still say transponder and smart keys mean 'tow it to the dealer'; in the UK a properly equipped auto locksmith cuts AND programs those keys at the roadside, usually same day and typically well below what a dealer charges, with no recovery truck.

Yes — V5C logbook or insurance in your name, plus photo ID, every time. It's exactly what you want any key-cutter to demand: it's the check that protects your car from everyone else.
