The Qashqai effect

Most run Nissan’s Intelligent Key — a proximity fob the car listens for — which means the classic Nissan callouts are keyless ones: “Key Not Detected” on the dash, a fob that works from one pocket but not the other, buttons that lock but a car that won’t start. Each symptom points somewhere different, and diagnosis beats replacement more often than the internet suggests. Nissan also shares platforms with Renault on several models — another reason the registration, not the badge, decides the job.

My Qashqai says Key Not Detected — what's going on?
The keyless system can't hear the fob. Most often it's the fob battery; sometimes the key itself; occasionally the car's antennas. Check the battery first (right way up, clean contacts) — if that doesn't fix it, the pattern of what still works guides the diagnosis.
The intelligent key buttons work but the car won't start — why?
That points away from the buttons and towards the immobiliser side — the chip, or the car's recognition of it. It's diagnosable, and often it isn't a whole new key.
